What’s An Apple AirTag And How To Use It
AirTag is a new smart device that Apple recently unveiled. This puck-shaped tracking unit is designed to help people locate misplaced or stolen items using the “Find My” app. The device costs $29 if you buy one, and $99 if you buy a pack of four AirTags. It can also be engraved with letters or an image of your choosing – and Apple can let you customize this for free.
For instance, AirTags are great because they can be put on keychains, luggage tags, loops, and other items. They use ultra-wideband technology and take advantage of Apple’s network of devices. They work as beacons and ping each other to determine the location of the missing item (that you set them up on). Basically, you can slap your AirTag on everything that you own and locate it within seconds whenever that item is out of reach or you don’t know where you left it.
Which Devices Can Use AirTags?
All compatible iPhones and iPads can use the Find My app to identify the approximate location of a missing item with AirTags on them. In order to track an AirTag, your device must be running iOS 14.5 or above on your iPhone or iPadOS 14.5 or higher on your tablet. If you don’t have the latest versions of the software, you can update them by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
Using an AirTag is simple – the “Precision Finding” feature lets you guide your device via on-screen instructions. However, you will need an iPhone 11 or 12, because the AirTag uses the camera, ARKit, accelerometer, and gyroscope for a more precise locating experience.
How To Set Up AirTags?
If you are wondering about setup, it’s really simple. All you need to do is take the device out of the box and pull out the tab so that the AirTag is activated. Just hold the device near a compatible mobile device so that it detects the tracker and prompts you to set it up. You can also customize the name of each AirTag.
Finally, the best thing about AirTags is that they don’t need to be charged. According to Apple, the battery lasts one year before it will need to be replaced. The good news here is that the battery is a standard CR2032 battery, which makes the replacement easy.
All in all, AirTags are a bit expensive but also very helpful devices that can show you the exact location of your important belongings. They are perfect for iOS users and also serve as a good fashion accessory, especially now that there are a bunch of keychains, straps, and cases coming out for them.
