Local Production Company Creates Winter Spotlight Film to Support Local Businesses

Jenna Sipponen and Louis Butterfield, owners of a local video production company noticed that a lot of businesses were closing down for the winter here in the South Okanagan, and things were getting really sleepy.

Not only that, but they heard that local businesses have suffered over the past few years between covid, wildfires, and rock slides. They decided to put their video skills to good use to shine a spotlight on some amazing businesses and places people can visit during the winter. They hope this video will help encourage people to support local businesses, shake the “winter blahs” off, and hopefully discover somewhere to call a new favourite.

As stated by LOCO BC in 2019, “Research shows that BC local businesses create more than double the economic impact of their chain competitors. For every $100 spent with a BC local business, $63 is re-circulated back into our BC economy (vs $14 for multinational corporations). They re-circulate 4.6 times more revenue in the local economy:

  • Local retailers re-circulate 63% compared to 14% for chains
  • Local restaurants re-circulate 68% compared to 30% for chains
  • Local suppliers (e.g. office supplies) re-circulate 33% compared to 19% for
    chains”

After one week of planning, five days of on-site filming and 50+ hours of editing, the video has been released.

“We weren’t really planning on making a winter themed spotlight video. It just dawned on us at the end of December 2023 when businesses started closing down, and we had just heard about the idea. We basically took the idea and made it our own, adding the creative spin of the winter theme,” says Jenna, co-founder of the video production company.

“Our hope is that these businesses will get more foot traffic this winter, and continue to thrive. And for all local businesses to remain at the top of people’s minds when they need something. Because it keeps more of our dollars in our community. There is so much that goes into owning a local business. These business owners put in countless hours behind the scenes. And oftentimes, people don’t realize how much of a difference it makes when they support a local business.”

In the film created by Jenna and Louis, it showcases businesses from several different industries and towns to really show off the variety our local valley has to offer. Almost anyone can find something in the video which appeals to them; from outdoor enthusiasts to wine lovers and families to people who are visiting.
