Opera Kelowna brings accessibility to the arts
Pay-what-you-can tickets welcome everyone to the opera!
Given the challenges facing all members of our community over the past two years, Opera Kelowna believes that supporting accessibility and promoting equal opportunity for arts attendance is more important than ever.
A consistent challenge for any arts organization is how to adequately fund operations through ticket sales, while ensuring the costs of those tickets remain within reach of the general public.
Fueled by a desire to ensure that all residents of the Okanagan have an opportunity to attend opera events regardless of ability to pay, Opera Kelowna is launching a dedicated Pay-what-you-can program. 10% of all tickets sold for Opera Kelowna events in 2022 will be assigned flexible pricing, allowing the buyer to designate what they pay.
Managing Director Brianna Wells says “In difficult times I think we have all turned to some form of the arts for comfort, inspiration and connection. This commitment from Opera Kelowna is about making that access simple and available to anyone seeking the power of the arts. No forms, no applications, just a commitment to bringing great beauty and power to everyone who wants to access it.”
To help support this initiative, Opera Kelowna is designating March as its Accessibility month as part of its broader Monthly Matching campaign. Running from now until the end of March, monthly public donations will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $5000 by community leaders that have committed to the company’s future. This month’s donations will go exclusively towards Opera Kelowna’s Pay-what-you-can program.
Funds raised from public sources are essential to ensuring Opera Kelowna can continue to offer innovative community programs such as these through 2022 and beyond.
