Bring More Musicals to the Okanagan: The Case for a Suitable Theatre Venue

Recent performances of the acclaimed musical Come From Away at the South Okanagan Event Centre (SOEC) in Penticton highlighted both the demand for high-quality theatrical productions and the limitations of the current venue.

This heartwarming story, which resonated deeply with audiences, marked a rare opportunity for locals to experience Broadway-caliber entertainment without the need to travel to Vancouver or Calgary.

Tickets for the event were priced between $125 and $165, with an optional $30 wine and cheese reception that offered a decent selection. However, while the performance itself was commendable, the venue’s design raised significant concerns.

In Come From Away, Captain Beverly Bass, the first female captain for American Airlines, receives a startling radio message On Sept. 11, 2001. The Twin Towers in New York City had been hit by two commercial airliners.

The arena, primarily used for sports and concerts, lacked the tiered seating and acoustic capabilities essential for an immersive theatrical experience. Many attendees seated far from the stage reported obstructed views and subpar sound quality, raising questions about whether the SOEC is equipped to host such events effectively.

The overwhelming turnout for Come From Away demonstrated a strong market for musicals in the Okanagan, suggesting that the community is eager for more performances. However, with the Kelowna Community Theatre too small for these productions, it’s time to explore alternatives. Could the KCT be renovated to better accommodate larger shows? Or should the SOEC reconsider its seating and sound arrangements to enhance the experience for future productions?

Some of the Plane People getting screeched in Come From Away. As part of the song goes: “Now with every transformation, comes a tiny bit of risk. You’ve got to walk the plank and there’ll be blood or there’ll be bliss. And it’s the same to be a Newfoundlander. Every person’s wish, so don’t be dumb. Just take the plunge. Go on, kiss the fish!”

To truly nurture the arts in our community, we need a venue that meets the unique demands of musical theatre. The Okanagan deserves more productions like Come From Away, and with the right infrastructure, we can ensure that audiences enjoy these performances to their fullest.

Let’s advocate for dedicated theatre space that brings more Broadway musicals to our region.
