Unique Double Bill of Opera Transports Audiences to 1930s Okanagan
Opera Kelowna is proud to present a double bill of dramatic and comedic brilliance with Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci and Giacomo Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi.
This summer, audiences are invited to step back in time to the 1930s Okanagan, where these timeless operas are reimagined within the rich cultural tapestry of Kelowna’s Italian Canadian history. Performances will take place on Friday, Aug. 23, and Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Kelowna Community Theatre.
Director Glynis Leyshon, a well-respected figure in Canadian opera, shares her enthusiasm for this unique production, “It is always a pleasure to be asked to direct two of opera’s most beloved works, but that pleasure is greatly heightened when the invitation comes from my dear friend and colleague Rosemary Thomson and the dynamic Opera Kelowna company. I’m thrilled to be here.”
This production is one of the most ambitious projects in Opera Kelowna’s history, featuring a cast of 12 principal performers, over 20 chorus singers, and stunning projection designs by renowned artist Laurie-Shawn Borzovay. For the first time, the company brings two short operas together in an original concept by Glynis Leyshon, deepening the connection to the Okanagan with authentic historical objects from local history on stage.
Leyshon’s vision brings Pagliacci and Gianni Schicchi to life through the memories of an elderly woman named Maria, who recalls a magical evening when a traveling troupe performed for her community. The productions weave together themes of love, jealousy, greed, and the joy of performance, all set against the backdrop of Kelowna’s orchards.
Pagliacci tells the tragic story of a jealous husband, Canio, who is driven to despair by his wife’s infidelity. As a member of a traveling theatre troupe, Canio must perform even as his heart breaks, leading to a dramatic and fateful conclusion.
Gianni Schicchi, on the other hand, offers a comedic escape as a cunning family schemes over an inheritance. The crafty Gianni Schicchi outwits the greedy relatives, delivering a surprising twist that leaves the audience both entertained and reflective.
Both operas will be performed in their original Italian, with English translations projected to ensure everyone can enjoy the rich narratives and beautiful music. Audiences will recognize iconic arias such as “Vesti la giubba” from Pagliacci and “O mio babbino caro” from Gianni Schicchi.
This production is a true community endeavor, with local and national artists coming together to create an unforgettable experience. Opera Kelowna extends its heartfelt thanks to the local billets, volunteers, chorus members, donors, sponsors, and community partners, including the Kelowna Canadian-Italian Club, who have generously supported this production.
“We couldn’t do this without the support of our community,” says Thomson. “From financial contributions to offering homes and lending voices, the people of Kelowna have truly made this production possible!”
Supported by Season Sponsor ATB Wealth, Opera Kelowna continues its commitment to accessibility by allocating 10% of all mainstage performance tickets on a Pay-What-You-Wish basis, made possible with the support of the Thomas Alan Budd Foundation.
