Heat wave calls for wine slushies in Summerland
By Monique Tamminga
Too hot to wine tour? Several Summerland wineries and cideries have found a way to cool you down during this heat wave.
Wine and cider slushies are on tap and sip-delicious. Here’s a few locations that not only have adult and kid friendly slushies but have lots of fun things to do while you are there.
Ve Oh Lay Acres Winery and Farm might have come up with the ultimate wine slushy. It’s called the Disco Cloud Wine Slushy with wine slushy on bottom and cotton candy on top. While this fun slushy isn’t always available, they do have regular wine slushies seven days a week during summer.
Located at 5616 Simpson Road, Ve Oh Lay crafts honey and grape wines from their farm. Enjoy a flight of their wines in one of their shaded, private cabanas, or swing on the group swings beside the waterfall.
The husband and wife team here are lovely to meet and share their passion of their wines, that have names to match their personalities like their Please Leave By 9, an off dry red made from honey, plums and strawberries or their Silly Goose, made of honey and rhubarb. They also have a full Mexican menu and are open late Friday and Saturday nights.
Family friendly, they have a petting zoo and sand volleyball court. Check out their upcoming Barbie party on July 21. The night will feature Barbie-themed treats, wine flights, wine slushies and a special surprise.
Summerland Heritage Cider has had apple or other fruit slushies since they day they opened. Offering both adult and kid-free apple slushies, they are ready to cool you down in their large barn-style tasting room or on the covered patio at 2113 Johnson Road.
Come out Saturday nights for lawn games like bocce, corn hole, spike ball and more. If you are an early bird, you have to come and check out The Crick Coffee Shop on the same property. All their iced coffees are to die for. Lots of locals covet this spot.
Dirty Laundry Winery at 7311 Fiske Avenue, has one of the best patios in Summerland, now serving rose slushies and non-alcoholic strawberry slushies. Buy the rose slushy and keep the glass while quantities last. Take in the views of the vineyards, Giants Head mountain and the KVR train under the grape leaf covered pergola and shade of big red umbrellas and misters.
It’s a busy place but the wait is worth it. They now are open later. Come an enjoy Sangria Sundays with live music and delicious sangria from 5-7 p.m.
Summerland Sweets is just down the road from Dirty Laundry. They aren’t offering wine slushies but they do have the ultimate summer treat – ice cream in every favourite flavour. They also have their fruit syrups to sample and a huge store selling their jams, syrups and more. Probably the best priced and tasting ice cream in town.
