Historic Places Day Celebrated in Penticton on July 6, 2019
Travel back in time on July 6th by visiting the S.S. Sicamous, the Leir House Cultural Centre, and the Penticton Museum & Archives on Historic Places Day.
Canada Historic Places Day is a national event hosted by the Nation Trust for Canada, Parks Canada, and local organizations and historical sites. This year, the S.S. Sicamous Museum & Heritage Park, the Penticton Museum & Archives, and the Leir House Cultural Centre are all participating with events at all three place.
The S.S Sicamous is celebrating with the launch of the Winter Scapes Art Show that showcases local artists’ work that features the SS Sicamous and the ships in the SS Sicamous Marine Heritage Societies care. On Friday night, July 5th they will be hosting an Art Show Opening on board the ship from 5:00 – 7:00 pm with goodies and live music. Saturday and Sunday the artwork will be on display on board the ship with the public invited to attend and to vote for their favorite piece.
The Penticton Museum & Archives is featuring an exhibit on our local hospital. The Spirit of a Caring Community tells the story of Penticton’s hospitals, from the very earliest days to the opening of the new David E. Kampe patient care tower in 2019. The Penticton Museum & Archives holds a large and varied collection of artifacts. The museum collection includes Indigenous culture, early settlement, a taxidermy collection that is one of the best in British Columbia, and a significant railroad collection. The archives contains over 20,000 historical photographs and an extensive array of documents chronicling the life of the city from its earliest days. The permanent gallery includes a Hands-on Heritage Lab, an interactive space where visitors can engage in a number of hands-on activities that promote understanding of science and natural history.
The Penticton & District Community Arts Council is celebrating the Leir House Cultural Centre with activities throughout the day. The public is welcome to picnic and plein air paint on the grounds. There will be musical performances from Sax Among Friends and the Youth Song Writing Camp. Take a historical tour of the Leir House and also view the current exhibition Our House, which features works from artists that work, teach, and play at the Leir House.
