What’s Up? The Local Music Scene Episode #9 on K96.3 and Gonzo Okanagan

Want to submit your upcoming events or music? We would love to hear it! Please send to whatsup@gonzookanagan.com.

As a fulltime musician for the past 35 years myself (yikes, that’s a long time!), I’ve come to appreciate the fact that I am able to perform and sing for people and in return, enjoy it as much as I do. There is something to be said for that exchange of energy and good vibes that live music brings to all, from the stage to the seats, there is nothing like it and I so look forward to feeling that again when we are out of this crazy mess we are in. Music is needed desperately in everyone’s lives.

The goal here from these episodes on Gonzo Okanagan & K96.3 Kelowna’s Classic Rock is to reach out and bring some awareness and light into the local Central Okanagan Music Scene by featuring their new music, events and in general, some light into the changes we’ve all had to adjust to in 2020. We all feel the strain in every aspect of these changes and are going to try to do our best to fill our cups up with some fantastic local music while many so of us hang on through this bumpy ride we are on. ?

Making an effort to change our own thoughts and habits, can strike a chord mentally and change us along with our communities lives. Be safe and…let’s ROCK N ROLL!

MUSIC FEATURE THIS WEEK WITH…

LIFE

Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/lifepurerock

Jeff and John have been friends and playing music together since they were kids in Winnipeg.

When they were 21, Jeff (the drummer) broke his back in a dirt bike accident, paralyzing him from the chest down but with perseverance, re-inventing the kit and a new playing technique and re-taught himself  to play in a new way and now plays better than ever.

John Buck, well… he is a Rockstar! This guy has worked so hard on and had some setbacks himself.  I’m sure some of you recall the finger/thumb incident, and look at him now with another release of some great tunes! So proud of you all and love the new tune!

Both John and Jeff have now been based out of Kelowna for many years now, along with bandmates Sean Lynnes and Brian (The Guitar Guy) McLennan who make up….LIFE and they have just recently completed a 5 song EP which was self Recorded, Produced & Written by vocalist John Buck.

Debut Single “Walk My Way” is released TODAY and we are so thrilled to support and announce it here on K96.3 Kelowna’s Classic Rock and GonzoOkanagan.com.

You can also check out the “clean” version of the song on their YouTube Channel. lol. It’s a funny play of the new release but it’s called “Wash My Way” – https://youtu.be/erIG-YU9gEw

Please visit them at lifepurerock.com for all links to their music and social media then, like, share, purchase and support our local music scene the best you can. These guys are hard working, talented and just awesome humans! 😉

STEVE SOUCY

Tragic Loss for our local music scene again this year.

Steve Soucy, who passed away this week at the young age of 63 has left us all in disbelief and shock.

Steve was a great family man, talented producer & songwriter for over 45 years has recorded and performed with 100s of artists. I am so grateful to have performed a handful of times with Steve over the years as well.

He’s performed blues, country, pop, rock & roll with the likes of Long John Baldry, Daryl Burgess, Powder Blues, Melanie Dekker, and recently, Alfie Zappacosta at MTL a few weeks ago which I was so fortunate to have caught the show.

At the Zappacosta show, I recall Steve closing his eyes and listening for the cues, timing and dynamics for the changes coming up this one particular song and remember just watching him experience and feel what was coming next in the song and fully consuming himself in the moment. It gave me chills just to be able to watch and experience what he was creating. True gift to remember forever. I recall telling him after his first set what a moving experience it was and how grateful I was for him giving me that experience and emotion, and I am so glad that I did say something instead of not because, he deserved to hear it.  It is a good reminder to always speak with love to those who make a positive impact on ours lives and music in general can bring it to so many at any time in our lives.

Steve also performed with his lovely wife and music partner and great talent herself, Julie Ann Masi who performed together in an incredible duo called LeMoNay.

Condolences to Julie, Jacob, Jackson and Jayla his brothers Shawn, Scott, and Serge and all his whole family and all his friends who loved the talented man, and there are so many that I don’t even think he was aware of.

There is a GoFundMe page for our great friend right here to donate what you can to help with the upcoming costs. Thank you.

There will also be several musicians and friends putting together a dedication video and audio (in their own homes) in celebration for Steve. Stay tuned for that! It will be quite the dedication and celebration of what an influence Steve was to so many of us musicians locally, music fans and beyond. <3

Here’s just a small example of Steve at a show, live. Rest in Peace brother. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten my friend. <3
