Go ahead and ask me
HodgePodge by Charlie Hodge
It seems I’ve recently tipped over the proverbial garbage can with rumours, scuttlebutt and eager-beaver conversations regarding elections. In particular local elections. A recent column and two different interviews with other media folks apparently caused quite the chinwags.
So, to be as redundant as possible I welcome and encourage you to get involved in your local politics be it running for mayor, or a seat on council, regional district or perhaps school board.
Like I said last week there are so many things to consider when seeking a job in public politics. The first trick is to think about what the decision will mean in your life, then what it will mean in the life of all of your family. Then try and find someone to give you some true insight into the job – like an elected official.
You should not have a hard time finding a current or past politician willing to discuss their thoughts on the job. Most of them (us) love to talk about themselves.
I recommend any currently active politician since they are up to speed on the intensity and workload involved. However, they may be hesitant or too busy now worrying about their own campaign since we’ve entered the ‘silly season’ (six months before an election when elected officials are all grandstanding for media and public attention).
I am the ideal sort to approach (Just ask me how great I am – go ahead)
Since we have finally more than confirmed I am not running for election again I can answer your queries with no conflicts of interest, I do not want the job or to steer you in a bad direction – only to help. My chair will be open to fill, and I will be cheering from the sidelines.
My entire focus will be to help you decide what’s best for you.
I will also be more than happy to share some campaign tricks or suggestions which I think might help.
What I do promise to do is not add to the gossip. I will not mention any potential candidate’s name. Ever, unless they ask me to.
Likewise, I will not mention any other politicians as candidates until they ask me too so.
This is my last written offer -but it remains until election day.
Now the rest of the job is yours.
